Mikimoto Pearl Island

Birthplace of Cultured Pearls

Mikimoto Pearl Island (ミキモト真珠島) in Toba City, Mie Prefecture, is where modern pearl cultivation began. In 1893, Kokichi Mikimoto successfully created the world’s first cultured pearl here, changing the jewelry industry forever. Today, the island is both a museum and a scenic destination, celebrating the history of pearls, Japanese craftsmanship, and the traditions of Ama divers.

When visiting here, you can combine your visit with Toba Aquarium, which is just across the street.

A Legacy of Pearls

Before Mikimoto’s innovation, natural pearls were rare and expensive. By perfecting pearl cultivation, he made beautiful pearls available to people around the world. The island now honors this legacy through exhibitions, demonstrations, and stunning jewelry displays.
