The Married Couple Rocks of Mie
Meoto Iwa (夫婦岩), also known as the “Married Couple Rocks,” are two sacred stones standing side by side in the sea off the coast of Futami, near Ise City in Mie Prefecture. The larger rock is considered male and the smaller one female, connected by a thick sacred rope (shimenawa). Together, they symbolize the bond of husband and wife, as well as the connection between people and the divine.
A Place of Spiritual Significance

The rocks are part of Futami Okitama Shrine, which enshrines Sarutahiko Okami, a Shinto deity known as a guide for safe journeys. The shrine and the rocks have long been associated with marriage, family harmony, and good fortune in relationships. Couples often visit here to pray for a strong and happy bond.
What to See

- The Rocks and Shimenawa: The shimenawa rope, weighing over a ton and measuring 35 meters, is replaced several times a year in special Shinto ceremonies. Watching the waves crash against the rocks makes the scene even more dramatic.
- Sunrise Views: On clear mornings in summer, the sun appears to rise between the two rocks, creating one of the most famous views in Mie. Around the summer solstice, Mount Fuji can sometimes be seen in the distance behind the rocks.
- Futami Okitama Shrine: A small but atmospheric shrine where visitors can pray and see statues of frogs, believed to symbolize safe returns and blessings.
Visiting Tips
- Best Time: Early morning is the most magical time, especially if you want to catch the sunrise.
- Shimenawa Replacement: The rope is renewed in May, September, and December, and the ceremonies are open to the public.
- Nearby Spots: Many visitors pair Meoto Iwa with Ise Jingu and Mikimoto Pearl Island in Toba.
Why Visit Meoto Iwa?

The sight of the two rocks tied together by a sacred rope is simple but deeply symbolic. It represents harmony, connection, and renewal – values that continue to resonate with visitors. Whether you go as a couple, with family, or alone, standing at the shore and watching the waves around Meoto Iwa leaves a lasting impression.
