When to Visit Japan

Not sure when to go? Let the seasons guide your journey through Japan’s most unforgettable moments.

Four seasons. Endless experiences.

Japan is lovely every season, yet the kind of adventure you will find depends on when you travel. From the blossoming cherry blossoms in spring to snow-filled onsens during winter, there is something new each season. Since we are locals in Japan, we have compiled the seasonal overview to assist you in planning the best period for you to visit, depending on your interests, weather conditions, and tourist crowds.

Spring (March to May)

Spring (March to May)

Why visit: Cherry blossoms, mild weather, seasonal festivals

One of the finest times of the year to travel to Japan is during spring, and it’s not hard to understand why. Late March to early April sees the whole country covered in cherry blossoms (sakura), filling parks and streets with beautiful landscapes. Hanami (flower viewing) picnics are a much-loved custom, particularly in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. The weather is pleasant, and most festivals occur during this period. Book in advance, though – the period is popular.

Summer (June to August)

Summer (June to August)

It is scorching and humid during summer in Japan. June heralds the rain season (tsuyu), however, the sky clears during July and August and there are fireworks festivals (hanabi taikai), night markets, and festivals. There are green hills and alpine trails as well in Nagano and Hokkaido. The cities are overwhelming during the summer months, yet summer does have its charm if one is well prepared.

Autumn (September to November)

Autumn (September to November)

Autumn is perhaps Japan’s biggest hidden secret. The weather is mild and lovely, the air is crisp, and the countryside is set aglow with radiant red and golden foliage. It is even possible to attend special light-up festivals at many temples and parks, and there’s the seasonal fare such as mushrooms, chestnuts, and sweet potatoes for the gourmets. Autumn is frequently less crowded than spring but equally spectacular.

Winter (December to February)

Winter (December to February)

If you like snow, peaceful towns, and relaxing onsens, winter is a great season for Japan. The northern regions of Hokkaido and Nagano receive top-class snowfall, ideal for snowboarding and skiing. If you are not a sporty person, you can simply take a relaxing bath in the onsens, enjoy sparkling light festivals, and seasonal dishes such as the hotpot called nabe. A bonus is that winter is less crowded with tourists apart from the main holidays.
