Adventure World

Family Fun with Animals, Dolphins, and Safari Rides

For many years, Adventure World(アドベンチャーワールド) in Shirahama, Wakayama, was famous for its pandas. But as of June 2025, the last remaining pandas have been returned to China as part of an international conservation program.

So, is it still worth visiting?

Yes, absolutely. Adventure World remains one of Japan’s most unique family destinations, blending a safari park, aquarium, and amusement park all in one. Whether you’re traveling with kids, planning a fun day out from Osaka, or adding something playful to your Wakayama itinerary, this park still has a lot to offer.

Safari World – Get Close to Wild Animals

Giraffe in Adventure world

In Safari World, you can ride a tram, jeep, or even bike through large open enclosures where animals roam freely. See giraffes, lions, elephants, zebras, and rhinos up close without glass or cages.

You can also walk through Kangaroo Square, feed smaller animals by hand, or take a behind-the-scenes feeding tour with lions or capybaras (reservations required).

Marine World – Dolphins, Penguins, and More

Pengins in Adventure World

The dolphin show here is one of the best in Japan, performed in a large arena with music, synchronized jumps, and plenty of splash zones. It’s a highlight for families and couples alike.

Marine World also features:

  • Penguins waddling through icy tunnels
  • Sea lions, otters, and seals
  • Large tanks filled with stingrays, fish, and coral species

Don’t miss the underwater viewing areas where you can watch dolphins glide just inches away.

Amusement Rides and Attractions

Adventure World also includes small-scale rides and attractions, ideal for kids and families:

  • Animal-themed Ferris wheel
  • Mini roller coasters
  • Train rides and carousel
  • Indoor play areas for younger children

While it’s not a major theme park, these rides add variety and let kids burn off energy between shows and exhibits.

Food & Panda-Free Souvenirs

Even without pandas, the gift shops and cafes are still fun. You’ll find:

  • Animal-themed lunches and desserts
  • Wakayama local snacks
  • Adventure World original character goods (especially for kids)

The park has kept its family-friendly charm, and food options range from quick snacks to sit-down meals.

How to Get There

From Osaka:

  • Take the JR Kuroshio Limited Express from Shin-Osaka to Shirahama Station (approx. 2.5 hours)
  • From the station, it’s about 10 minutes by taxi or local bus

From Tokyo:

  • Fly from Haneda to Nanki–Shirahama Airport, then take a short shuttle or taxi

It’s only a few minutes away from Nanki-Shirahama Onsen, so it’s easy to combine both in one trip.

With its safari rides, dolphin shows, and family-friendly attractions, it remains one of the most well-rounded parks in Japan. For those staying in Shirahama or exploring Wakayama, it’s a fun and easy day trip that appeals to all ages.
