Nestled in the Oku-Nikko region, Ryuzu Falls is one of those quiet spots that surprises you with its beauty. The name means “Dragon Head Waterfall,” and if you look closely, the twin streams flowing side-by-side over volcanic rock do resemble the shape of a dragon’s head. It’s not as dramatic as Kegon Falls, but that’s the charm, it feels more personal, more peaceful.
Best Time to Visit
If you can time your visit for mid to late October, you’ll be rewarded with fiery red and gold leaves surrounding the waterfall. It’s one of the first places in the Nikko area to show autumn colors each year due to its elevation. You can feel the crisp mountain air even in early autumn.

Walking Trails and Viewpoints
The viewing deck is right near the road and easy to access, but if you’re up for a gentle walk, a well-kept trail follows the Yugawa River upstream toward Yunoko Lake. It’s flat and good for beginners or families, and the path is shaded by trees especially beautiful in fall.
There are also a few benches and rest spots along the way where you can stop and take in the sound of the water.
Ryuzu Falls Tea House
Just beside the waterfall is a small café with large windows facing the falls. It’s a great place to rest with a cup of coffee or soft serve ice cream. In autumn, it gets a little crowded with leaf-peepers, but in other seasons, it’s very calm.
Inside the teahouse, you can buy souvenirs like local jam, Nikko yuba snacks, and postcards featuring the waterfall.
