The Railway Museum

Located in Omiya, Saitama, The Railway Museum (鉄道博物館) is Japan’s leading railway museum, operated by JR East. Opened in 2007, it showcases the history, technology, and future of rail travel in Japan. For visitors, especially families, history fans, and train enthusiasts this museum is a must-see destination just outside Tokyo.

Highlights of the Museum

Historic Trains on Display

The museum’s main hall features more than 30 real train cars from different eras. You can walk inside and explore:

  • Steam locomotives from the early days of Japanese rail.
  • Classic Shinkansen (bullet train) models.
  • Vintage carriages and dining cars used in the 20th century.

Being able to step inside these trains offers a rare glimpse of how rail travel shaped Japanese society.

Train Driving Simulators

A favorite with both children and adults, the simulators let you experience what it’s like to operate a train. Some are simple, designed for kids, while others use real equipment once used by JR East for training drivers.

Miniature Train Park

This outdoor area allows visitors to drive miniature trains on tracks that weave through the park. It’s extremely popular with children, so tickets for the mini trains should be booked early after entering.

Dioramas and Model Trains

The massive HO-gauge railway diorama is one of the largest in Japan. Dozens of model trains move through realistic landscapes, representing stations, cities, and countryside across Japan.

Interactive Exhibits

The museum doesn’t just showcase history, it teaches science and engineering. Exhibits explain how signals, tracks, and electricity work, making it engaging even for those unfamiliar with rail technology.

Food and Shopping

The museum’s restaurants and cafes serve train-themed meals, such as bento boxes modeled after station lunch boxes (ekiben). The gift shop is a paradise for train fans, with exclusive model trains, books, and souvenirs you can’t find elsewhere.

Seasonal Events and Exhibitions

The Railway Museum frequently hosts special exhibitions, such as displays about new Shinkansen technology or collaborations with anime and pop culture. Seasonal events for kids are also popular during school holidays.

The museum is located next to Tetsudō Hakubutsukan Station on the New Shuttle Line:
