A Scenic Drive Over Okinawa’s Emerald Waters
Stretching gracefully across turquoise waters, Kouri Ohashi Bridge (古宇利大橋) is one of Okinawa’s most breathtaking coastal landmarks. Opened in 2005, the bridge connects Yagaji Island with Kouri Island, spanning nearly 2 kilometers over the East China Sea.
For travelers, driving across Kouri Ohashi feels like floating over the ocean, with panoramic views of white sand beaches, coral reefs, and the deep blue horizon. It’s a must-see stop on any northern Okinawa road trip.

The Beauty of the Bridge
The bridge is free to cross and designed for both cars and pedestrians. As you drive across, the water changes shades from emerald green to deep blue, a sight that makes it one of the most photographed locations in Okinawa.
Many visitors stop at the observation areas on either side to take photos and soak in the view. Sunset is especially spectacular, with the sky glowing over the ocean.

Kouri Island Highlights
Once across the bridge, you’ll reach Kouri Island (古宇利島), known locally as “Love Island” due to legends tied to Okinawa’s creation myth. Popular spots include:
- Kouri Beach: A perfect swimming spot right beside the bridge, with shallow waters and facilities for families.
- Heart Rock: A pair of heart-shaped rocks on the northern shore, a romantic symbol often featured in travel guides.
- Kouri Ocean Tower: A 36-meter-high tower with a panoramic observation deck, seashell museum, and restaurant overlooking the island.
