Okama Crater

The Emerald Gem of Mount Zao

Okama (御釜), often called the “Five Color Pond,” is a volcanic crater lake located on Mount Zao, straddling the border of Miyagi and Yamagata Prefectures. Its nickname comes from the way the water changes color depending on the sunlight and weather, shifting from deep blue to bright green within a single day. Surrounded by rugged volcanic peaks, Okama is one of the most iconic views in the Tohoku region and a must-see spot for nature lovers.

After seeing Okama, many visitors relax in the hot spring town of Zao Onsen, famous for its sulfuric baths.

A Natural Wonder of Zao

Okama, Miyagi

Okama was formed by a volcanic eruption in the 1720s and sits inside a circular crater about 27 meters deep and 1 kilometer in circumference. The perfectly round shape resembles a cooking pot, which is where its name “Okama” (literally, “cauldron”) comes from.

The lake is filled with acidic water, so no fish or plants live inside, but the vivid colors and dramatic setting make it one of Japan’s most photogenic lakes.

Best Viewing Spots

  • Kattadake Peak (刈田岳): A viewing platform offers sweeping views of the crater and surrounding mountains. On clear days, you can see as far as the Pacific Ocean.
  • Zao Echo Line and Zao High Line: Scenic mountain roads lead up to the crater, open from late April to early November. The drive itself is part of the experience, with winding roads and panoramic views.
  • Seasonal Views: In early summer, the fresh green landscapes make a vivid contrast with the blue lake. In autumn, the surrounding slopes are painted in red and gold. In winter, the area is covered in snow and closed to cars, but nearby Zao is famous for skiing and “snow monsters” (juhyo).
